a lunch buffet

Every now and then it’s good to just let go and indulge. Wait, I’m pretty sure that’s everyday for me. hehe.

Yesterday I went to a lunch buffet with my grandparents. I’m pretty sure they passed on their foodie genes to me because they love a good buffet and are always on board when anyone mentions going out to eat. Buffets are not something I eat a whole lot of (thank goodness), but I’m always excited for them because it means a huge variety of options. With an abundance of desserts. The best part in my opinion : )

Personally, when it comes to buffets I’m all for the the appetizer/starters (the cold stuff) and the sweets/desserts and would be totally okay with skipping the food in between.

Starting off, I made myself a platter of sashimi, sushi, a variety of smoked fish, a scallop, and raw oysters. Plus a gherkin, which I went back for 2nds and 3rds of. I love all things crunchy and sour.

I contemplated just sticking with the cold foods and maybe making a salad, but there were a ton of hot items and I figured I should probably try at least a couple.  Since I was already feeling fairly full (& saving room for dessert) I settled for some organic veggies, mashed potatoes + organic australian beef cheek, & free range chicken. I gave away the spinach frittata because I realized there was ham in it, which I don’t eat. I also had a unpictured plate of a sampling of various curries and naan.

Next up fruit & cheese. This is always a must for me as they’re probably two of my favorite things. And the cheeses were so so good. I could eat this platter everyday as a meal and be perfectly happy.

Finally the dessert! I had my eye on the two dessert tables from the very beginning when I first stepped foot in the dining room. There were too many things to choose from, earl grey cookies and macarons to mousse’s and almond cakes, and I ended up only getting to try about 1/3 of what they had to offer since I didn’t want to waste what I couldn’t eat. Next time I’ll start with dessert : )
I chose mini Portuguese tarts, bread pudding, cheesecake, sacher torte, mini madeline, and a mille-feuille to split with my grandma. My favorite was the mille-feuille, the pastry at the front of the plate with the blueberry on it. The cheesecake was also really good and I’m totally not a cheesecake person. There are very few cheesecakes I like, but this one was creamy and light with a hint of cheesy sweetness. Super yum.

I also couldn’t pass up trying the ice cream. Raspberry sorbet, mango sorbet, vanilla, and strawberry. I ended up tasting only about a lick of each scoop because A) I was full and B) it wasn’t that good.

To finish, I had a cup of coffee followed by a nice hot cuppa tea.

I also slightly munched on this plate of fruit which definitely put me way over the top. I have some trouble saying no to fruit sometimes.

The tight pants and extreme fullness was definitely worth it. Now, if you’ll excuse me I need to head off to the gym…

Btw, if any of you do Zuzka workouts, have you done ZWOW #66? I was planning on doing it today, but I’m slightly intimidated and I also have sore/tired legs so I’ll probably hold off for now. Today will most likely be ZWOW# 52 so that I can stretch out my legs.

Have a great Friday!

adventures in seattle: part 2

Happy Wednesday! This week seems to be moving pretty quickly, yes?
Ok, so where were we…Oh yes, I recapped the first part of my weekend in Seattle (<<– click there if you missed it) and need to finish the latter half. Here we go!

Saturday morning we kept it pretty relaxed and hit up for Portage Bay Cafe in Ballard, a local-organic-sustainable eatery, for a mostly healthy brunch. Because you know, it’s practically mandatory for brunch to be both savory and sweet.

After some major pondering (everything sounded SO incredibly delicious), I ordered the mushroom fall/winter hash, which was 3 scrambled eggs, local, organic roasted root veggies and butternut squash, roasted onions, sauteed mushrooms, and fresh herbs. Super delish.

But the highlight of our brunch was the Oatmeal Cobbler French Toast my friend ordered for our table to share. It’s exactly as it sounds which was…soft and fluffy challah bread dipped in a cinnamon custard, topped with an oatmeal-crumb crust and finished off with a generous drizzle of organic pear compote & vanilla creme anglaise. Uh, yum?

And as if that weren’t enough already, you can take it up to their famous toppings bar and go crazy. House-made whipped cream + strawbs + bleubs were added to the plate of french toast.

Ah.maze.ing.

The vegetarian sloppy joe breakfast sandwich, quinoa cake benedict, and wild salmon omelette were also quite delicious and worth ordering if you ever visit Portage Bay Cafe.

We spent the rest of the afternoon doing some shopping in Ballard and eventually making our way over to Fremont. I love how there are so many different neighborhoods in Seattle and they all have their own characteristics and vibe that make them each so special. Plus you can find the most fun & adorable things in the various shops along the street.  We went to an adorable fabric shop, a vintage shop, some of the cutest boutiques, and refreshed with some hot teas in between.

We finished up our shopping day with a visit to TJ’s where we picked up some groceries to make pizza and pizookies for dinner at home. Sometimes a home cooked meal is a million times better than going out to eat.

Grocery shopping when you’re hungry is probably only a good idea if you for some reason want to ensure you have plenty of leftovers. We were quite ambitious with our meal planning and ended up making 5 pizzas and a gigantic salad for 6 people. I think we could have easily fed another handful of people with the amount of food we ended up with.

Three of us were on pizza duty. Using TJ’s fresh whole wheat and herb pizza dough, we made both pesto and marinara pizzas with fresh mozzarella slices, shredded parmesan, and smoked mozzarella cheese. Toppings included mushrooms, bell peppers, olives, marinated artichoke hearts, garlic, fresh basil, avocado, prosciutto, and eggs.

We made sure to balance our meal with lots of yummy veggies.

salad

If you like eggs, I highly suggest you add it to your pizza. It’s fantastic. Just crack your eggs on your pizza with approximately 7 mins left (adjust according to preferred done-ness) of bake time (at 425F) for a semi runny yolk that’ll ooze into your pizza when you slice. So.good.

homemade dinner

After dinner, it was pizzokie time. Ohh ya.

pizzookie pizzookie

We made our pizzookie with two bags of tj’s double chocolate chip cookie dough (just press it all into a greased cake tin) and baked for approximately 25-30 mins at 350F or until edges are slightly crisp and golden. The middle should still be slightly undercooked for the ultimate gooey bite. Once out of the oven, let cool approximately 5-10 mins and top with a very generous heaping of creamy vanilla ice cream, stick in some spoons, and your dessert is ready. The ice cream gets melty all over the warm cookie.
Suuuper indulgent. But that’s perfectly acceptable and necessary some nights. ;)

A little digesting later, we headed out for some fun and drinks in Capitol Hill.

the girls

After popping into a couple bars in the neighborhood, we eventually rounded out the night at the Rock Box with a bit of the 90s at a karaoke place. I think we did a pretty good job at covering the top artists of that era. Spice up your life, anyone?

It was a late night (early morning?) but on Sunday morning we headed to Quest church for Easter service and then lunched in Ballard at Big Bowl Pho before packing everything up, saying our goodbyes, and heading to the airport.

Seattle is such a fun city to visit because I think it has a little bit of something for everyone. And I totally lucked out this weekend with pretty much perfect weather that I hear doesn’t actually come around as often as it may seem.

pikes

I already miss everyone, but that just means we get to plan another trip for the near future, right? ;)

adventures in seattle

Hi friends!

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend & Easter Sunday! Especially if you had a three day weekend! I spent my weekend in Seattle with friends and it ended up being an amazingly gorgeous weekend. I’m talking like the 60F degree kind. With lots and lots of sunshine. It was awesome.

gas works park

It also turned out to be quite the foodie weekend. That’s the advantage of having friends who love food ;)

I flew in Thursday afternoon, took the super convenient and affordable ($2.75 only!) light rail downtown to begin the weekend with sushi at Wasabi.

Room was saved for dessert at Molly Moon’s in Wallingford later on in the evening.

molly moons

Omg. The ice cream (and just the vibe) at Molly Moon’s is so awesome I don’t want to think about it because it makes me sad that I don’t have something like that where I live. They have some pretty fantastic flavors like earl grey, honey lavender, & lime cardamom to name a few. After some taste testing I made a very difficult decision and went with a half scoop of balsamic strawberry & a half scoop of vegan coconut chunk in a freshly made waffle cone. I was kinda iffy about the waffle cone since it might have been a bit over the top, but boy am I glad I got it. Creamy crunchy & pretty much just hit the spot.

The next morning, Friday, we took a bus downtown to The Crumpet Shop for some carby goodness before heading to The Bar Method in Westlake for quite the intense workout.

The Crumpet Shop is located in Pikes Place Market and makes freshly baked organic crumpets every morning that you can top with anything from Nutella or marscapone to organic eggs and pesto. The crumpets are just off the griddle and perfectly toasty on the outside, warm and chewy on the inside.

I enjoyed a nice and toasty crumpet with pesto + egg + english cheese + tomato along with a hot foamy latte.
yum yum.

We spent an hour or two walking off our breakfast as we made our way over to our 9:45am barre class where we clenched and shook our way through class. This was my first time taking this kind of fitness class and it was definitely a different kind of pace and intensity than other types of fitness classes. Its actually very intense, but a different kind of intensity than say, circuits. It an isometric kind of exercise  where you work muscles in static positions.

After barre, we headed back to Pikes

Pikes

Where we hit up the russian bakery, Piroshky’s for a couple a couple of fresh baked piroshkies (baked stuffed buns) to nosh on as we explored the market. One potato, onion and cheese and one smoked mozzarella, broccoli, and mushroom were happily eaten.

piroshkys piroshky's

Lot’s of fresh seafood and produce were seen. But my favorite part of the market are the flowers. They’re just so gorgeous and really light up the market. I wish I could buy fresh flowers like those here in Texas. And for that price.
Those bouquets below were only $15.

pikes pikes

And now that the cherry blossoms are in full bloom all over the Seattle, they made many appearances in the flower arrangements at Pikes. These below were just taken in the neighborhood where I was staying. So so pretty.

And just before leaving Pikes we went down to check out the gum wall, just for kicks.

Pretty neat gross, eh?

The day was too gorgeous to not spend more time outdoors so later in the afternoon, after we showered and freshened up, we headed out to Fremont to pick up a couple Caribbean sandwiches from Paseo’s  to take with us to picnic at Gas Works Park. We paitently waited in line for about 45 mins and ordered a seared scallops and a tofu delight.  The sandwiches were huge and two were aplenty for the three of us to share.  They ended up being kinda messy, but their flavors definitely made up for our sauce covered hands.

It was the perfect day to just chill out and soak in some vitamin D while overlooking downtown Seattle. Eventually our other friends arrived from Portland and we headed back to our friends place to get ready to head out for drinks and dinner at Bastille in Ballard.

One of my friends and I shared the cauliflower ‘chateaubriand’ {center-cut cauliflower “steak”, horseradish, preserved lemon, almond and kale puree} and daily special {salmon cooked medium with veggies and potato mash} along with some unpictured frites & aioli.

Friday was a very delicious day :P

And this seems like a good stopping point. More seattle weekend adventures to come!

Hope your Monday’s are great!
