WIAW #3: road trip edition

Greetings from the road!

I’m blogging from my phone again and currently en route to Rhode Island! I’ve been on the road almost 9 hours now.

I didn’t want to miss out on the WIAW fun again (thanks to the lovely Jenn for hosting!!) so please bare with my photos–all taken through a camera phone.

Peas and Crayons

We were supposed to leave around 9am this morning, but as usual, we didn’t make it out the door until a couple hours later.

I didn’t get the memo that we weren’t leaving at 9am so my breakfast was all to-go style. And eaten at home.

Half a wheat bagel topped with almond butter, bananas, and honey.

Rounded out with a pb & chocolate protein smoothie.

Since we were behind schedule, lunch was eaten in the car. Apparently there is at least one Sonics in every small town/middle of nowhere town in Texas…so Sonic’s it was!

After perusing their menu I settled for a breakfast burrito. Basically a flour tortilla with egg, onions, jalapeños, and tater tots. That last one was a surprise to me.

I thought the tater tot was wrapped in there by accident at first, but after a couple bites i realized there were more inside. I guess that’s why it was called the “supersonic” breakfast burrito.

Dessert was some dried mango slices. Dried fruits are one of my favorite road trip foods.

Easy to pack and even easier to eat :P

Many sweet potato tortilla chips were also consumed between lunch and dinner.

I’m pretty sure snacking and road trips go hand in hand ;)

We finally stopped around 8:30pm for dinner at Rendevous in Memphis, Tennessee.

Its famous for its charcoal ribs, but since i don’t eat pork I went with the charcoal charbroiled chicken breast with double coleslaw (since the beans are cooked with pork).

I ended up making it into a sandwich. The coleslaw was SO sour, but I love it that way.

Guess who’s eaten here before??

Julia Childs! I was pretty darn excited when I saw that! :)

I don’t think we’ll make it out of Tennessee tonight, but we’ll probably get pretty close.

Ok, its my turn to drive! Night oaties!

Do you like road trips? Or do you prefer flying? – I guess it depends where I go…if it’s scenic or not. I also hate turbulence, but flying is just SO much faster ;)

Cravings?

Do you ever have those days where you just don’t crave anything?

As someone who always knows exactly what they feel like eating at every meal and/or craves multiple things at once, it’s been an odd couple of days for me.  My appetite is still present and I’m still hungry and all that, but I just don’t feel like eating anything in particular.

It’s actually making eating…a slight headache?

Not even my ginger ‘cats cookies for people’ aren’t tempting me.

Which, btw, decided to hit the ground running yesterday.

This is reason #58 why there needs to be Trader Joe’s near me. I have jelly fingers that seem to drop things ALL the time.

Or it could be that I’m just clumsy…

You know those people who have odd bruises on their legs/arms? Yeah, thats me. I manage to run into my dresser or bed corners a couple times a week and trip over non-exisistant objects on the ground…

Anyways, back to food…since I usually know exactly what I’m craving for each meal, I feel satisfied after I eat it, but lately, since I don’t know what I want to eat, I haven’t been having that so-called ‘satisfied‘ feeling and it’s just weird.

I’ve basically just been eating a lot more carb-y and simple things.

Plain foods.

This morning I had a waffle drizzled with manuka honey.

And yesterday it was a whole-wheat bagel with almond butter and honey drizzle.

I’ve also been having smoothies

And rice cakes with almond butter and tea.

Even fruits (one of my absolute favorite foods) haven’t been all that appealing to me lately.

[Yellow] Watermelon being the only thing I really feel like eating.

Last night I went out to dinner and ordered salmon, but when it came all I ended up eating were the sides, carrots and a plain baked potato.

I guess on the plus side meal preparations take no time at all ;)

I’m sure my cravings will reappear one of these days.

But until then, I’ll just be eating a lot of almond butter+honey.

But no complaints there :)

Do your cravings ever disappear leaving you craving…nothing at all?

One of Those Days

Yesterday was just one of those days.

You know…the kind where things don’t exactly start out the way you were planning and then you just have this feeling in you that its going to be an interesting day. But not in a good way…

I woke up at exactly 7:15 am yesterday (Saturday), which was exactly 15 mins before I needed to be out the door on my way to the airport. I have myself to thank for that since I waited until 11:55pm the night before to do my workout. I didn’t finish until almost 12:45am when I finally showered off and then eventually got to bed at who knows when.

I had even set two alarms – one at 6am and one at 6:15am so that I could get a couple things done before heading to Cali for the day. But of course, I missed both of them and somehow bolted up at 7:15am when I heard a noise outside my room. I washed up, threw on my clothes, printed out some papers, and was out the door by 7:35am.

About half way to the airport I realized I had forgotten my breakfast that I had packed. My mom had even specially bought me a fresh wheat bagel from Panera that morning and I had packed a small tub of almond butter along with some watermelon and cherries. I was looking forward to eating it on the plane. Needless to say, I was super bummed.

But whatever, I got over it and figured I’d just have a better rest of the day. But for some reason I just had this odd feeling in the pit of my stomach. And it wasn’t hunger. For once.

A couple hours later we arrived at LAX and headed to pick up our rental car.

After waiting a good 30 mins or so (the guy at the counter was highly interested in golf and had a long conversation with my brother about his clubs and such…) we got in our car and headed towards Mission Viejo.

Not even a few blocks in, I hear a screeching noise and a loud crash. We basically got slammed by another car that was speeding and full on rammed our car – right next to where I was sitting.

I guess that solved the matter as to what that weird feeling was I had in the pit of my stomach.

After exchanging information and all that hubbub, we were on our way once again. This time we actually made it onto the freeway ;)

We made a quick pit stop at Trader Joes (!) where I picked up a few snacks before heading to my grandpa’s place.

Those ‘cats cookies for people’ are ADDICTING.

Finally we made it to see my grandpa – the sole purpose of my trip to Cali!

It’s been a while since I’ve seen him and it was nice to spend an afternoon with him. I think that’s his favorite beanie because every time I see him he’s wearing it ;) I guess he’s where I got my love of hats from!

Before I knew it we were headed back to the airport. I guess I was just shaken up from our earlier accident, or I just never paid attention before, but there are some crazy drivers out there!

Our flight home was an interesting one. We flew by some massive clouds that were constantly lighting up with lightning.

It was so constant that I could take photos with my camera phone. We were actually flying so close to it, it was making me super nervous. Plus all that lightning and the winds was making the airplane shake.

Eventually we flew into a massive cloud where all the flight attendants had to take their seats in anticipation of some further turbulence. I’m never excited to hear that because it basically freaks me out. I hate turbulence. With a passion.

We landed smoothly around midnight and headed home. Let’s just say I was glad to call it a day!

Do you ever have those days where you feel like somethings a little off?
