Mixing it Up

This afternoon I got to work on what I was going to bring to the bbq tonight.  I decided on furikake party mix.  It’s not exactly the healthiest of things and not a part of my usual, more healthful, repertoire, but it’s fun to mix it up every once in a while.  :P

So, what IS furikake?  This is furikake...

There area lot of different kinds.  This one in particular is  Aji Nori Furikake.  It’s basically just a mix of dried green seaweed, roasted sesame seeds, sugar, and salt.  It smells SO good and taste even better.  Sometimes I’ll sprinkle it on rice and it gives it a nice salty kicky.

Furikake party mix is a popular snack in Hawaii and since it’s only available all the way across the Pacific ocean, the only way I can get it in Texas is to make it myself.  It’s basically a more asian version of chex mix.

K’s Furikake Partayy Mix

Wet:

  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter or earth balance
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey or light corn syrup
  • 1/3 cup canola oil, olive oil, or coconut oil
  • 2 T shoyu or soy sauce
Dry:
  • 6 cups crispex cereal
  • 2 cups honeycomb cereal
  • 2 cups pretzels
  • 2 cups popcorn
  • 1 bottle furikake (~2 oz)

Preheat oven to 250.

In a saucepan heat butter, sugar, oil, soy sauce, and light corn syrup over medium-low heat.  (If using honey, heat everything else first and stir in once butter is melted.)

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine crispex, honeycomb, pretzels, and popcorn.

Pour the wet into the dry and mix until the dry mix is fully coated.

Break out the furikake…

Then sprinkle in the furikake and mix to evenly coat.

Pour furikake mix onto baking sheets and bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 mins.

Enjoy!

I like to mix it up every time with different types of cereals and snacks, but always keeping the crispex as my base.  Usually bugels are used in this mix in place of popcorn, but I’m not really into bugels. I like to use pita chips (broke in pieces), chex, or captain crunch too.

Well, I’m off to the bbq…let’s hope its a crowd pleaser! :)

What are some of your favorite snacks or dishes to bring to summer bbq’s/parties?

Never again…

Will I be running in the afternoons…At least not until summer is OVER.  I think it’s time to get my lazy hiney up earlier on Saturday mornings after my eventful afternoon yesterday.

My smart-self decided to go for a run at 3:45pm yesterday afternoon for my weekly Saturday 3 miler.  I got to around 2.5 miles when things started going down hill.  I could feel the heat radiating upwards from the concrete and it felt as though the sun was shining directly on me from above.  It was just hot all around.  At mile 2.55 I literally had to keep jogging back and forth along one block of a park because that was the only area where there was some slight shade from some trees and it was the only way I could keep going.  Finally at 2.8 I just had to stop.  It was WAYY too hot and I was not prepared for the heat at all.  I had no idea it was that hot out and I guess I didn’t have enough water in me.  I was sweating like crazy and so incredibly thirsty I ended up calling my mom to see if she was nearby and could bring me some water (momma to the rescue!).  Luckily I have the sweetest mom and she was close by at Wal-Mart and brought me a bottle of ice cold water.  I was planning on continuing on, even if it was just walking, after she brought me my water, but Idiceded against it in the end.  I was so hot I kept feeling chills up and down my back, so i just went home.

Lesson of the day yesterday…check the weather before going out.  I took this photo with my phone as I was driving yesterday evening.

99 degrees at 7:30pm.  Thats Texas for ya!  I don’t even want to think about how hot it was around 4pm.

Needless to say, this morning (and last night) involved plenty of hydration.

I decided to change things up a bit and go the more savory route this morning for breakfast.

Breakfast taco (egg white + pepper + swiss cheese) with a side of a pineapple ring stuffed with low fat cottage cheese. Good and simple.

I’m going to a BBQ tonight and want to bring something along, so I’ll be doing some sort of baking this afternoon. Favorite Sunday afternoon activity :)

Hope everyone’s enjoying their long weekend!
